GC 65852.2.
(a) (1) A local agency may, by ordinance, provide for the creation of accessory dwelling units in areas zoned to allow single-family or multifamily dwelling residential use.

To learn more The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) has prepared the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Handbook (updated December 2020) to assist local governments, homeowners, architects, and the general public in encouraging the development of ADUs.  It provides a brief history and summary of recent legislation that amended ADU law: AB 3182 (2020) and SB 13, AB 68, AB 881, AB 587, AB 670, and AB 671 (2019). Please see Attachment 1 for the complete statutory changes for AB 3182 (2020) and SB 13, AB 68, AB 881, AB 587, AB 670, and AB 671 (2019).
