First Of It’s Kind Tiny Home Community

The Cottages on Vaughan broke ground this week and will be the first of its kind in Clarkston, GA. Situated on a half-acre, the development will include 8 tiny homes on permanent foundations ranging from 250-492 SF oriented around a common green. It is centrally located one block from downtown Clarkston, community hub Refuge Coffee and from the local park Friendship Forest. The development has easy access to the Path Foundation trail that connect Clarkston to Decatur, the City of Atlanta, and Stone Mountain.

An HOA will be established and each owner of the development will own the land the tiny home is situated on.  It is not a lease agreement. Each tiny home will have their own tax parcel.

Developed By The Micro-Institute

The Cottages on Vaughan was developed by the Micro-Institute, a 501(c)3 non profit that is dedicated to educating individuals, groups and cities about the positive impacts of micro living.Their mission is to connect thought leaders to professionals to encourage and enable developments of walk able, sustainable ”micro-hood’; communities. Founders of the Micro-Institute , Kim Buccierro and Will Johnston were advocates for the adoption of Appendix Q in Georgia. At this time, it is referred to Appendix S until the effective date of  January 2020.

A Statement From Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry

“We are proud to partner with the Micro-Institute on this innovative new approach to housing,” said City of Clarkston Mayor, Ted Terry. “We recognize that the past 50 years of urban sprawl has segregated communities, contributed to global warming, and exacerbated housing inequality. By experimenting and innovating with new development ordinances, we are able to allow a greater range of housing options.”

Clarkston City Council Passed The Tiny Home Ordinance

The development comes nearly 14 months after the passage of the city’s tiny-home ordinance. The approval of this project represents a move towards achieving one of the top prioritized in our 2040 comprehensive plan –– increasing stability in our housing market by providing more home ownership opportunities,” council member Jamie Carroll said. “I hope that other cities will look at our tiny home ordinance and this development and see that it is possible to create a housing landscape that allows for home ownership to come in all shapes and sizes.”

Affordable Price: Starting At $99,000

The development will be sold at an affordable, market driven price and will be a demonstration site and after construction, they will give monthly tours available to the public. The development will serve as a an inspiration and model for municipalities, developers and future  investors as a testament to the success and much needed solution for affordable housing.
