Our view: Tiny homes: Quaint? Yes; Issues? Yes Sept. 18th, 2019
Grand Forks seems to have cornered the market on apartments. When a housing crunch hit the city in the early 2010s, developers reacted, building numerous new apartment buildings. Back then, we reported only 2.8% of local apartments were available at any given time.
After a flurry of construction, the Herald reported in early 2017 that vacancy rates had climbed to 9%.
Four in the space of one: Developer aims to build tiny homes in Grand Forks Sept. 12th, 2019
Cody Bartholomew, a mechanical engineer by day who wants to build the homes on the side, told City Council members on Monday, Sept. 9, that he can fit four homes of about 785 square feet each on a single 100-by-140-foot lot. The homes would share a communal area with possibly a fire pit and each would have a single-stall garage.

Grand Forks City Council discusses tiny home regulations Sept 9th, 2019
At their Monday, Sept. 9, meeting, a city planner discussed possible regulations for the homes, including how many people can live in one and how many can be built in the city.
“(We want) to get it out for discussion purposes, and I think some of the challenges are then to see how some of our current zoning regulations fit in with this particular style of housing,” said Brad Gengler, city planner.
North Dakota Voting On Proposed Amendments 2018 IRC August 1st, 2019
Building Codes Proposed Amendments Voting Meeting:
On September 5th at 8:00 AM CST at The Great River Energy Building, 1611 East Century Ave., Bismarck, ND, a Voting Meeting of proposed building code amendments will be held for the participating jurisdictions and organizations.
The purpose of the meeting will be to vote on the proposed amendments from the public and Building Code Advisory Committee, 2018 International Building Code, 2018 International Residential Code, 2018 International Mechanical Code, 2018 International Fuel Gas Code, 2018 International Existing Building Code, and the prior amendments to those codes. These amendments will become part of the updated North Dakota State Building Code effective January 1st, 2020.
Grand forks – Tiny Homes July 15th, 2019
The Grand Forks Planning Department is developing a policy for so-called “tiny” homes. City Planner Brad Gengler says the idea has been tossed around for some time. Gengler says staff is looking at how other cities handle the idea to see if it would work here.
